Auto Insurance New Jersey

We represent Travelers, Plymouth Rock, Progressive, Hanover, a subsidiary of Allstate, and other car insurance companies.  We will test prices for you in multiple companies.

New Discounts:  Progressive Insurance has introduced its Snapshot device.  Short version, Snapshot plugs into your car computer, keeps track of how you brake and when you drive, but not where you drive or how fast, and sends the info to Progressive.  It can give up to 30% discounts if you fit their profile of safe drivers.   Click here for Progressive's explanation page.

New Programs: Plymouth Rock Assurance has introduced its new Get Home Safe Program.  If you are a Plymouth Rock customer, they will reimburse you once per year for a cab ride home if you feel as though you may be drowsy, impaired, or that driving is dangerous in any way.  This is up to $50, one way, once per year.  Click here for the Plymouth Rock explanation of this new benefit.

How Do Insurance Companies Set Rates?

Car insurance has become so competitive that each company has its own discounts and preferred rating factors.  That means that it is in your interest to let us check multiple companies to see which one gives you the lowest price for the auto insurance coverage you need. For a competitive quote or multiple quotes for your automobile insurance in New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania, click the get-a-quote button, contact us, or call us at 1-800-548-2329.

Rates by area are driven by traffic density, accident frequency, frequency of car thefts, frequency and severity of damage to cars, frequency and severity of lawsuits.  Hunterdon County has fewer than 400 people to the square mile; Union City has about 40,000 people to the square mile.  There will be two different results in terms of car accidents just from that difference.

In addition to basic facts about an area, the kind of car you drive has an impact on the cost of accidents.  Expensive cars cost more when repairing a given amount of damage.

Your driving record has a heavy impact on the rate you are charged.  People with bad driving records tend to have more accidents.  Young drivers have more accidents and cause more fatalities per mile driven than do middle-aged drivers. (Sorry young drivers, click here to see teenage drivers' statistics from the Insurance Insitute for Highway Safety.)

What Does Car Insurance Cover?

Auto insurance provides property, liability and medical coverage:

  • Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of your car.
  • Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
  • Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.

An auto insurance policy is comprised of six different kinds of coverage. Most states require you to buy some, but not all, of these coverages. If you're financing a car, your lender may also have requirements.

Most auto policies are for six months or a year.  Some will give you a discount for pre-paying the entire cost, or for allowing automatic monthly deductions from your checking account.

The six parts of an auto policy
Your auto policy may include all 6 coverages or some of them. Each coverage is priced separately.

  1. Bodily Injury Liability
For injuries the policyholder causes to someone else.
  2. Medical Payments or Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
For treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder's car. At its broadest, PIP can cover medical payments, lost wages and the cost of replacing services normally performed by someone injured in an auto accident.
  3. Property Damage Liability
For damage the policyholder caused to someone else's property.
  4. Collision
For damage to the policyholder's car from a collision. The collision could be with another car, a light post, fire hydrant, etc.
  5. Comprehensive
For damage to the policyholder's car that doesn't involve a collision with another car. Covered risks include fire, theft, falling objects, missiles, explosion, earthquake, flood, riot and civil commotion.
  6. Uninsured Motorist Coverage
For treatment of policyholder's injuries as a result of collision with an uninsured driver. Underinsured motorist coverage can also be included in an auto policy. Underinsured motorist coverage comes into play when an at-fault driver has auto liability insurance, but the limit of insurance is inadequate to pay for your damages.

Each state requires that you have certain types of coverages with minimum liability limits.  GBW Insurance strongly recommends that your New Jersey Automobile Insurance bodily injury liability limits be at least $250,000 per person and $500,000 per occurrence.  Consider adding Personal Umbrella Insurance for higher limits.  You have too much to lose.
